Best Historic Stays: The Herlong Mansion in Micanopy
Tucked away in the tiny town of Micanopy, the Herlong Mansion is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered by those seeking a serene retreat, just south of Gainesville. It’s the perfect place to rest, relax, and reset, while appreciating the rich history and natural beauty of the area.
The Origins of Herlong Mansion
The Herlong Mansion was originally built as a simple home in 1845 by one of the original settlers of Micanopy on what was once a Native American trading route, now known as Cholokka Boulevard.
In the early 1900s, Zeddy Clarence Herlong moved into the then-modest house with his wife, Natalie Simonton. With his wealth from the lumber and citrus industries, Zeddy transformed the simple farmhouse into the grand mansion visitors see today.
For years, the Herlong family raised six children at the mansion. However, after his wife’s passing, Zeddy remarried and moved out of state. The mansion sat vacant for a number of years until the 1980s when it was purchased by a young couple who converted it into a bed and breakfast.
Over the years, the Herlong has received local, state, and national recognition, including in the New York Times Sunday Magazine and on ABC’s Good Morning America.
The Herlong Mansion entered a new era in 2021 when Kim Shore became the newest owner. She continues to bring her own touch while maintaining the mansion’s historic allure. Shore’s passion for history and fresh ideas are adding to benefitting the community and guests alike.
“We’ve introduced lawn events like plays and concerts for the community,” Shore shared as she reflected on the mansion’s continued presence in Micanopy.
A Look Inside Herlong Mansion
The Herlong Mansion, with its four stately Corinthian columns and surrounded by lush gardens and old oak trees, instantly captures the attention of those passing by.
Inside, the rich wood paneling, carefully laid floors, and grand staircase welcome visitors with an air of warmth and history. Just to the right of the main entrance in the parlor, you will find Herlong family memorabilia, including hand-written love letters that offer a glimpse into the lives of those who once called this home. These small details make the mansion feel like more like a home than simply just a place to stay.
While the house has only one television, located in the parlor, modern conveniences like Wi-Fi are available throughout. I particularly enjoyed the little perks, such as complimentary tea, coffee, and freshly-baked cookies, perfect for an afternoon treat. Guests are also invited to enjoy a glass of beer or wine in the late afternoon. I also appreciated the fridge and microwave available for guests to use.
These thoughtful touches added a level of comfort that made the stay feel truly special.
The Enchanting Porches and Guest Rooms
One of Herlong Mansion's most striking features is its inviting verandas. Whether swinging on the second-floor or rocking in a chair on the first-floor veranda, there is no better place to relax. The gentle breeze, combined with the views of the gardens, creates the perfect setting to unwind after a day of exploring.
You can visit the Herlong time and time again as it has thirteen individually decorated rooms and suites to choose from. Shore says the Herlong Suite and Dogwood are especially popular, as both overlook the veranda on the second floor.
During my stay, I had the pleasure of staying in the Iris Suite on the third floor. The spacious room is complete with a queen-size bed and lovely sitting area, but the true highlight was the Jacuzzi spa. I intended to spend only 20 minutes enjoying it, but I ended up soaking in the peaceful atmosphere for over two hours! It made my stay feel even more luxurious.
Homemade Breakfast at the Herlong
Mornings at Herlong Mansion begin with the aroma of a delicious homemade breakfast drifting through the house. Breakfast is served in the dining room between 8:30 am and 9:30 am, with fresh coffee and orange juice available earlier.
Both days of my stay, the breakfast did not disappoint, with cinnamon rolls and French toast being personal favorites. Guests can share any dietary restrictions at check-in. The breakfast felt like a true Southern treat, making the mornings here one of my favorite parts of the stay.
The Herlong's Unique Atmosphere & Popular Times to Visit
Herlong Mansion offers a rare sense of tranquility and Shore says that is something visitors often comment on. The sound of rain hitting the plants, the breeze rustling through the trees, and the birds chirping create a peaceful ambiance that’s hard to find elsewhere. It’s easy to lose track of time while taking in the soothing sounds of nature, and that’s exactly what makes this place so special.
Shore noted that many guests from more bustling areas, like South Tampa or St. Petersburg, are amazed by how quiet the mansion is, often remarking, “We can actually hear the birds!”
Given that sound does carry within the house, families with young children may prefer the Pump House Cottage or Carriage House, both of which are separate from the main mansion, allowing for a more private stay.
Due to Herlong Mansion's proximity to the University of Florida, it’s wise to book early during peak times like home football games, move-in days, and graduation weekends. The annual Micanopy Fall Festival in October also draws large crowds, with tens of thousands of visitors descending on the small town. In the summer, Herlong Mansion becomes a popular destination for those looking to explore nearby springs, such as Silver Springs State Park and Rainbow Springs State Park, which are within a 50-minute drive. Whether you visit in summer or fall, it’s worth planning your stay around local events to experience the community’s vibrant atmosphere.
Local Must-See Attractions
The Herlong Mansion contributes to Micanopy’s local economy and is ideally situated for exploring the town on foot. Some must-see spots include:
- Micanopy Historical Society Museum: This free museum provides a fascinating look into the town's history, though it has limited hours (Tuesday to Sunday, 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm), so plan accordingly. The museum is small, but it offers rich insights into the early days of the area.
- Old Florida Café: A great spot for classic Cuban sandwiches and Key Lime Pie, capturing the essence of Old Florida. The perfect stop for a casual lunch with a taste of local flavor.
- Antique Shops: Micanopy is known for its antique stores, and The Micanopy Trading OutPost is a personal favorite, showcasing famous Florida Highwaymen paintings, which depict the natural beauty of the state. Browsing the antique shops feels like a treasure hunt, with unique finds around every corner.
Just a short drive from Herlong Mansion is Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park. I recommend visiting multiple times during your stay as it will increase the chances of spotting the sometimes elusive wild horses and bison that can be seen roaming the prairie. The park is a nature lover’s dream, with breathtaking views that make it worth a few visits.
