Best Historic Stays: Peninsula Bed & Cocktails in Gulfport

Hospitality meets mixology at the Peninsula Bed & Cocktails in Gulfport! This historic boutique hotel recently reopened following a renovation and is now delighting guests with a blend of comfort, charm, and craft cocktails.

After admiring the iconic bright yellow building and clock tower for years, it was a thrill to step inside. I can happily report that you'll find just as much sunshine inside its doors.

A Historic Haven with a Modern Vibe

Built in 1905, the Peninsula has seen a number of transformations over the years. Originally constructed as a hotel, it served as a hospital during World War II and was later abandoned for a period of time.

I'm told the hotel wasn't always its bright yellow! Legend has it, the building was originally white and later painted yellow.

The former Historic Peninsula Inn was sold several years ago and reopened in early 2024 as Peninsula Bed & Cocktails after an extensive renovation.

"We wanted to create something truly unique,” shared Kayla Burch, Peninsula Bed & Cocktail’s property manager. “The front desk is now a cocktail bar, so our bartenders are the first to greet you."

And don't miss the Speakeasy elevator—a vintage birdcage-style lift where you can enjoy a shot and snap a Polaroid photo to capture a memory from your stay.

Don't try to pick up any of the glasses or bottles in the elevator, like I did! All are glued down so things don't go tumbling when the elevator is transporting guests.

Themed Rooms for Every Taste

Peninsula Bed & Cocktails stands apart from the competition because of its 16 individually decorated cocktail-themed rooms.

"A lot of people are looking for something new and different," Burch explained. "Here, every room is customized, so you could stay 16 different times and have a unique experience each visit."

Guests can pick from The Pal0ma Suite, the Margarita Deluxe Room, the Mimosa Room, Bee’s Knees Room, and more.

Burch notes, "The Bees Knees room is all yellow, with white accents at the top, mimicking the froth of the cocktail."

I loved my stay in the orange Mimosa Room. The view overlooked bustling Beach Boulevard below. The curtains perfectly matched the bright paint job. There was also a comfy couch (orange, of course) and a modern bathroom decorated in a hue of blue.

Other rooms at the Peninsula have fun paint schemes, while some have custom wallpaper to match the theme. No matter where you stay, every single room has two framed photos featuring the history of the cocktail and how to make it.

If you'd like a drink waiting in your room when you arrive, you can add on a ready-to-pour drink that matches the theme. Plus, you can book each specific room online, making it easy to choose your favorite theme in advance.

For those traveling with pets, the Peninsula has two dog-friendly rooms, including the spacious Greyhound Suite (named after the cocktail, not the dog). This suite is perfect for larger parties, with high ceilings and charming pink hues.

Room rates range from $173 to $231 as of July 2024. Parking is conveniently available behind the hotel, and the entire city is very walkable, making it easy to explore all that Gulfport has to offer.

A Journey in Progress

This is just the beginning for Peninsula Bed & Cocktails, according to Burch. Right now, a continental breakfast (with a waffle maker!) is offered to guests, in addition to the lobby bar. The owners have big plans for the future, including potentially expanding dining options.

"This is just phase one. We're excited about what's next," Burch hinted.

I, for one, am super excited to see what’s in store! Whether you're a cocktail enthusiast, history buff, or just looking for a unique getaway, Peninsula Bed & Cocktails in Gulfport promises an experience unlike any other.

Cheers to a fantastic, memorable stay!

Gulfport Adventures Await

The quirky waterfront community of Gulfport has been celebrating its unique charm long before it was trendy. The city's eclectic mix of artists, writers, musicians, and small business owners, combined with its walkable downtown and stunning bayfront, make Gulfport a must-visit destination. Whether you're exploring its vibrant art scene, enjoying live music, or simply strolling along the picturesque streets, Gulfport offers a welcoming and unforgettable experience.

Here are some of my must-do activities during your stay:

  • Coffee at Gulfperk: Grab a cup of coffee at this beloved local spot.

  • Stroll Beach Boulevard: Explore eclectic shops, charming cafes, and unique galleries along this vibrant street.

  • Walk by the Gulfport Casino: You’ll find active sand volleyball courts, the massive gecko statue (known as “G. Gordon McFly”), and a small homage to a cat who once frequented the area, Morris.

  • Visit Clymer Park: Enjoy the winding paths and sculptures in the park, and appreciate the cute houses that line the road.

  • Explore Clam Bayou Nature Park: Enjoy hiking, bird watching, and stunning views of Boca Ciega Bay. Plus, it’s one of the rare places where you’ll find some slight hills!

  • Dine at Pia's Trattoria: Savor delicious Italian cuisine in a cozy atmosphere. I highly recommend the gnocchi!
