Best Historic Stays: The Terrace Hotel in Lakeland
A landmark of Swan City’s skyline is about to celebrate a historic milestone! The Terrace Hotel Lakeland turns 100 this October, and a grand centennial celebration is in the works. While special events will take place throughout October and November, the historic charm and exquisite dining make this a destination worth visiting year-round, no matter the occasion.
The Terrace Hotel’s Storied History
The neoclassical Lakeland Terrace Hotel (now known as The Terrace Hotel Lakeland) first opened its doors in 1924, on the corner of Main Street and Massachusetts Avenue, with a grand gala reception and dance. It was remarkable for many reasons: not only was it Lakeland’s first high-rise, but it was also considered one of Florida’s finest year-round inns because it had air conditioning.
“It was one of the only buildings in Central Florida to have air conditioning so it was really the hotel of choice for many people,” said Daniel Batson, Sales and Catering Manager at The Terrace Hotel.
Through the 1940s and 1950s, the Terrace remained Lakeland’s premier hotel, hosting famous guests such as Henry Ford, Frank Sinatra, and Frank Lloyd Wright.
Unfortunately, the hotel fell on hard times by the 1970s. The future looked grim as it was forced to close in the 1980s and 1990s. However, good news came in 1996 when a developer purchased the property for $150,000 and invested seven million dollars in a full restoration, bringing the Terrace back to its former glory.
In 2020, it was acquired by local investors and joined the Tapestry Collection by Hilton in April 2021, bringing with it additional renovations that guests will be sure to appreciate today.
What Awaits You at The Terrace Today
The Terrace hotel pays homage to its 1920s art deco origins, with vibrant colors reflecting the hues of nearby citrus groves and nods to the royal family’s swan descendants, who call Lakeland home.
In case you didn’t know, Lakeland’s swans were gifted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1957. Today, their descendants are iconic figures in the city, and the Terrace Hotel proudly showcases them in its décor, from the wallpaper to various art pieces throughout the property.
I had the pleasure of staying in a luxurious one-bedroom king suite. At 225 square feet, the room had a separate living area with a desk and TV—perfect for getting some work done during a break from exploring Lakeland. And let’s talk about the adorable swan-themed bathroom wallpaper—where can I find that for my home!?
The Terrace is also ideal for special events. The Cypress Ballroom, with its unique cypress ceilings, is a popular venue for weddings and corporate events. For smaller gatherings, the Lake Mirror Room offers breathtaking views through its floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook picturesque Lake Mirror.
Parking is hassle-free, with complimentary valet and on-site options, but do note that pets are not allowed unless they are service animals.
Guests will also find modern amenities, such as a fitness center, but trust me—you’ll find plenty of scenic spots nearby to get your steps in. More on that later!
Dining at the Iconic Terrace Grille
A quick Google search will tell you all you need to know about the love Lakelanders and visitors alike have for The Terrace Grille. This fine dining spot has become a tradition for generations, with its floor-to-ceiling arched windows, historic black-and-white patterned floors, and dramatic cypress ceilings.
“It’s that place where you want to have a special occasion,” said Batson. "Many people have gotten engaged here, celebrated birthdays, weddings, it’s really been a focal point in many lives.”
You’ll find something for everyone on the menu. For breakfast, Toast Française is a must-try—thick brioche soaked in a sweet custard of green cardamom, served with whipped mascarpone, berries, and maple syrup. It’s a treat that must be tasted to be believed!
For dinner, choose from entrées like Pan-Roasted Red Snapper or Spicy Rigatoni, a crowd favorite. And if you have a sweet tooth like me, you’ll have a hard time picking between the Orange and Vanilla Crème Brûlée and the Vanilla Bean Cheesecake, made with a passion fruit marble with a graham cracker crust.
Make sure to visit the Mezzanine level after dinner for a relaxing coffee or nightcap, with a perfect view of the hotel lobby and the Terrace Grille.
