Best Historic Stays: The River House in Jupiter
If you need a reset following the hectic hurricane season in Florida, look no further than the River House, part of Jupiter Vacation Rentals, in Jupiter. Tucked away at the end of a street, this gem is great for a multi-generational getaway. You’ll find unique nods to the area’s nautical history inside and outside the historic home. From sunrise to sunset, there’s plenty of entertainment to enjoy. I can easily see why the River House is one of Jupiter’s most sought-after rentals, and I think you will too!
The Story of the River House
Built in the 1960s, the River House saw the addition of a second floor in the 1970s, long before mansions lined the Loxahatchee River in Jupiter and Tequesta. Jim and Molly Sparger, the previous owners, were passionate about preserving local history through their extensive collection of funky finds that filled the inside and outside of the property. In fact, boaters sometimes mistook the house for a quirky restaurant. Sadly, both passed away in 2020 and 2021, but they left a lasting impact on the community.
When the property hit the market, some potential buyers had plans to demolish it, but locals Jim and Kelly Arnau, now owners of Jupiter Vacation Rentals, stepped in to preserve its historic charm. They carefully sifted through thousands of collected items and picked nautical antiques and Old Florida memorabilia that are on display today inside the home for guests to appreciate. I loved seeing the vintage postcards, ship relics, and even a photo of railroad magnate and Florida’s tourism pioneer, Henry Flagler.
“All these features really add to just the old, unique vintage nautical feel to the River House,” said Kelly Arnau.
Comfort, History, and Adventure Await
The River House comfortably accommodates ten guests with its four bedrooms and three bathrooms. You’ll be welcomed by original cedar walls, which were expertly whitewashed to create a lovely, bright space. The living and dining rooms feel inviting and have thoughtful décor that showcases the rich history of the area.
Past the kitchen, which has original cabinets, you’ll find the ground-floor primary suite. This room is ideal for guests seeking privacy or those who prefer to avoid the spiral staircase leading to the second floor.
Upstairs, you’ll discover three additional bedrooms, each with its own unique charm. One features twin beds a striking bronze ceiling, and really neat ship models, while another has model airplanes suspended from the ceiling. The upstairs primary suite is the real showstopper, with its bamboo-thatched walls and ceiling. It feels like a tropical retreat, complete with retractable sliding doors that lead to a large balcony with panoramic views of the river!
I absolutely loved waking up in the primary and seeing the sun rise from my bed! That’s just the beginning of a perfect day at the River House.
guests will find plenty of spaces to relax, including the white sandy beach. spacious sundeck, large tiki hut, and second story treehouse. And for ultimate relaxation, take a dip in the 8-person jacuzzi spa! I got in and never wanted to leave!
Don’t miss out on the bikes, kayaks, and paddleboards too! Dolphins, manatees, plenty of fish, and a wide variety of birds are spotted daily.
And if you want to get around even faster, guests have the option to rent the 21-foot Boston Whaler. It’s the perfect way to explore nearby sandbars, visit the Jupiter Lighthouse, or stop at some of Jupiter’s iconic waterside restaurants, like Guanabanas, a beloved local spot in Jupiter, for drinks and fresh seafood.
And, if you need space for more than ten people, you can rent the River House’s sister property, Mangrove Cove. You can use the boat to travel back and forth between the two properties— talk about a memorable vacation!
“You’re not gonna find anything like this in Jupiter,” said Kelly Arnau.
Future Plans
Don’t miss out on the front yard too! Explore the lush gardens, where the Arnau family added a Chicago brick patio from an old mill. The path leads you to a historic building known as the “General Store,” dating back to the 1940s and ’50s. This building is currently home to some of the more fascinating items from the Sparger collection. However, the Arnaus plan to transform the General Store into a recreation space with games and lounging areas, giving future guests even more to enjoy.
