Best Historic Stays: Hotel Flor in Tampa
Hotel Flor, once known as the Floridan Hotel, is entering a new chapter in its storied history. This iconic building made its mark in the 1920s as Florida’s first skyscraper, a record it held until the 1960s. After a multimillion-dollar restoration—and with continued efforts to preserve its grandeur—the hotel has reclaimed its place as the crown jewel of Tampa. Join me as I show you around this latest transformation, now part of Hilton's Tapestry Collection.
A Storied Past
Opened in 1927 as the Floridan Palace Hotel at 905 N. Florida Avenue, the hotel enjoyed a golden era from the late 1920s through the 1960s, serving as a vibrant social hub for business leaders, military personnel, and celebrities. During World War II, its popularity soared, and rooms were scarce. Over the years, icons like Elvis Presley and Gary Cooper stayed at the hotel, and even sports stars like the Cincinnati Reds players—who stayed here during Spring Training—added to the hotel's allure.
After the 1960s, the hotel saw a period of decline as residents moved out of Tampa’s downtown core. While it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in March 1996, the historic gem was in poor condition and in 2005 even faced the possibility of demolition. Thankfully, the Floridan was saved by an international hotelier who invested over $18 million to meticulously restore the hotel’s original architectural details. The Floridan reopened its doors on July 30, 2012, just in time for Tampa's first Republican National Convention.
In 2023, the hotel underwent a second major renovation, with more than $30 million invested in modern upgrades. Rebranded as Hotel Flor, it joined the Tapestry Collection by Hilton, welcoming a new era for this iconic landmark.
“We’re really excited, really proud of the property. It’s got so much charm and character,” said Joyce Turner, Director of Sales. “It’s a great staple in downtown.”
Today’s Hotel Flor
While recently renamed as Hotel Flor, the iconic red neon “Floridan Hotel” sign still lights up the city skyline, proudly perched atop the building and visible from miles away—even while driving on I-275.
When I arrived, the exterior was covered in scaffolding. It’s part of an exciting historic restoration and preservation project set to complete in late 2024, bringing Hotel Flor even closer to its former grandeur.
Inside, the renovation work has been beautifully finished, and the result is stunning. As you walk up the stairs into the lobby, you’re greeted by bright white, ornate ceilings adorned with wagon wheel chandeliers.
Behind the check-in desk, you’ll see a charming vintage room key holder and classic photos that set a nostalgic tone.
During my stay, the lobby buzzed with energy due to conventions and events taking place in the hotel’s large banquet spaces.
Today, Hotel Flor offers 210 beautifully updated rooms and suites across 19 floors. Recent upgrades include modern touches in the bedrooms, such as plush bedding, elegant dressers, and stylish coffee tables.
My 14th-floor room provided sweeping views of the Tampa skyline, including the iconic Tampa Theatre sign. Despite being in the heart of downtown, the room was quiet.
You’ll notice signs of the hotel’s historic past, such as framed artwork in the rooms and even a vintage mail-drop system that once allowed guests to send letters from their rooms. Now, this chute offers a playful way to drop off your room key at checkout.
As with many historic hotels, the elevators are a bit smaller and slightly slower than modern standards—but it’s all part of the charm!
Traveling with pets? Hotel Flor welcomes four-legged friends, with nearby walking spots like the Tampa Riverwalk. Guests looking for an indoor workout can also enjoy the 24-hour fitness center.
Parking, of course, is limited in downtown. The hotel offers valet only, with rates at $40 for valet service, $25 for nearby daily parking, and even $5 parking at The Dan (more on that in just a moment!). A convenient texting service lets you request your car before heading downstairs.
Historic Charm and Modern Flavor
Those familiar with Tampa lore may already know about the iconic Sapphire Lounge, renowned for its popularity with celebrities visiting the area and military servicemen and local women during World War II.
Today, the original Sapphire Lounge has been transformed into The Dan, offering a modern twist on the classic speakeasy experience.
The lighting is dim, the decor a delightful nod to the roaring 20s, and a striking mural of a woman with a monkey on her shoulder immediately catches your eye as you enter.
The menu balances local ingredients with classic dishes, featuring favorites like raw oysters, premium steaks, and fresh seafood.
Don’t leave without trying the Dates in a Blanket, Seared Scallops, and Chicken Francese. The Bourbon Bread Pudding with Plantain Foster sauce is the perfect way to cap off your evening.
And, to end the night on a whimsical note, every guest receives a bit of cotton candy.
The Dan is also home to creative and classic cocktails, including the Hollywoodland (Plantation rum, grapefruit, grenadine, lime) and Green Door (Old Forester whiskey, Pimms, ginger, mint, lime). Be sure to check out the seasonal specials as well!
Also inside Hotel Flor is the Cass Street Coffee Company, perfect for grab-and-go. They serve delicious La Colombe coffee and fresh pastries, including an unforgettable cinnamon roll.
If you’re looking for a more leisurely start to the day, head to Flor in the Morning, overlooking the grand lobby, and enjoy house specialties like Bananas Foster French Toast, Avocado Toast, or a Brisket Benedict.
