There are multiple tours every day through Ocean Force Adventures that depart from Miami Beach Marina. And, the great thing about this tour is that the boats are small AND fast! That means you get to cover more ground and have a more intimate experience !
As we zipped around Biscayne Bay, past downtown Miami and toward Stiltsville, Captain Nick shared interesting facts and stories about the area.
If you don’t know about Stiltsville, here’s a little bit of the backstory, according to the National Park Service:
Stiltsville has a colorful history that dates back to the 1930s, when "Crawfish Eddie Walker" built the first shack on stilts above the water. Over the years more buildings were constructed, and the area took on an aura of mystery. Accessible only by water, the area was the place to see and be seen when visiting the winter resorts on nearby Miami Beach. Stories of illegal alcohol and gambling led to several police raids on the Bikini Club and Quarterdeck Club. At its peak in 1960, there were 27 structures on the flats, but hurricanes, fires and the ravages of being in such an exposed place made every building relatively short-lived.
Some of the stilt houses that are still standing are used by locals. We spent some time near one of the houses Captain Nick has been to himself. he says it’s one of the best places to take a nap! Good to know…!
After that, we sped by the Cape Florida Lighthouse at Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park and to downtown Miami. The rain didn’t dampen our spirits because Captain Nick provided us with ponchos!
This tour (technically called Small Group Biscayne Bay + Stiltsville Tour) was one of the major highlights of my trip to Miami and I think you’ll absolutely love it too. Let me know if you give Ocean Force Adventures a shot!
